A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck Bogo City, Cebu, injuring four individuals. Injuries included cuts from broken glass, fainting, and one alleged fall from a height, which is still being verified. CCTV footage from a gadget store captured the intensity of the shaking, showing merchandise falling from shelves.

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck 17 kilometers southeast of Bogo City, Cebu, Philippines at 3:22 p.m. on April 6, 2026, with a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The earthquake lasted 1-2 minutes and registered Intensity IV (Moderately Strong) in San Francisco (Cebu), Hilongos, and Villaba (Leyte), with weaker intensities felt across multiple areas in Cebu, Leyte, and neighboring provinces. Authorities in Bogo City reported no major damage or confirmed injuries from this specific event, though several establishments in the city experienced minor structural damage and temporary closures as a precaution.

Bogo City Assistant Commandant Joseph Mark Monleon urged the public to stay alert and calm to avoid accidents, noting that at least three residents were particularly affected by panic. Many residents expressed trauma from this being the second significant earthquake since the devastating 2025 magnitude 6.9 quake that struck the same region. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported that power transmission in Cebu remained stable with no interruptions or damage to infrastructure.

Phivolcs warned that aftershocks and minor damage could be expected following the tremor. The earthquake prompted residents to evacuate buildings as a safety precaution, though no classes were disrupted since the school year had ended on March 31. Large establishments like fast-food chains temporarily closed their operations while assessments were conducted. Initial evaluations by local authorities found no major issues, with ongoing monitoring of the situation.

This April 2026 event appears relatively minor compared to the deadly magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck near Bogo City in September-October 2025, which caused at least 69-72 deaths and injured nearly 300 people, with Bogo being the hardest-hit area. The 2025 quake resulted in significant building destruction, overwhelmed hospitals, and caused surface ruptures along the Bogo Bay Fault. The recent tremor served as a reminder of the region's seismic vulnerability and triggered trauma responses among residents still recovering from the previous disaster.
