The United States successfully rescued an airman whose F-15 fighter jet was shot down in Iran, resolving a major crisis. Iran's Revolutionary Guards, however, also claimed to have destroyed several 'enemy flying objects' during the US rescue mission.

On April 3, 2026, an F-15E fighter jet was shot down over southwestern Iran by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces, marking the first U.S. fighter jet downed in combat in over 20 years. The incident occurred in a remote area, with IRGC claiming responsibility and releasing debris photos consistent with an F-15. The two-person crew ejected safely, with the pilot being rescued hours later on Friday despite Iranian forces targeting a U.S. Blackhawk helicopter during the initial recovery attempt.

The second crew member, identified as a weapons systems officer (described by President Trump as a colonel), remained missing for over a day before being successfully rescued by U.S. special forces in a daring operation that concluded early Sunday local time (April 5). The rescue involved specialized units including Air Force Pararescuemen, supported by extensive air assets and lethal weaponry. U.S. Air Force jets struck Iranian forces to block IRGC interference during the extraction, and the operation was monitored from the White House Situation Room by President Trump and his advisors.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed to have destroyed several 'enemy flying objects' during the U.S. rescue mission, including a C-130 transport plane and two Black Hawk helicopters downed south of Isfahan, plus an Israeli drone. This was reportedly part of a joint Iranian operation involving aerospace, ground forces, popular units, Basij, and police. The rescued officer sustained injuries but is expected to recover, according to President Trump's announcement.

The incident occurred amid escalating conflict between the U.S. and Iran that had been ongoing for six weeks. All U.S. personnel involved in the rescue operations safely exited Iranian territory. The Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported that this was the second U.S. Air Force combat plane to crash in the Persian Gulf region recently, with search and rescue efforts continuing for other incidents. The successful rescue of both crew members resolved what could have been a major international crisis.
