A viral event sparks debate on dignity, labor, and the limits of ‘art’

The viral event refers to the controversy surrounding Golden Faith Academy's "AI-Generated Art Contest" in July 2025, which sparked widespread debate about creativity, labor, and the definition of art. The senior high school program announced a contest with the theme "Reimagine What's Possible," promoting prompts as the new "canvas" rather than traditional artistic tools like brushes or styluses. The contest went viral after the Facebook page FFTM (Follow The Trend Movement) shared a screenshot of the announcement, accumulating over 53,000 likes, 13,000 shares, and 2,000+ comments.

Critics argued that AI-generated art lacks genuine creativity, imagination, and vision, with many commenters stating that AI merely regurgitates trained data rather than creating original art. Comments like "Imagine putting 'AI-generated' and 'creativity' together" and "walang creativity" (no creativity) dominated the discussion. The debate centered on whether AI outputs qualify as legitimate art and whether such contests undermine the dignity of traditional artistic labor that requires years of skill development and human effort.

This controversy followed similar incidents in 2024, including the PHILRECA Digi-Poster Competition where an energy company faced criticism for recognizing an AI-generated artwork. In that case, despite no explicit AI ban in the contest rules, social media users expressed outrage over rewarding non-human labor, with some suggesting such contests should be rebranded as "Best prompt awards" rather than art competitions.

The core themes in these debates include the dignity of artistic labor (with users emphasizing that tools like rulers and grids are valid artist aids but rejecting fully generative AI as bypassing human skill), the limits of what constitutes 'art' (detractors claimed AI lacks originality and serves only as a guide for improvement), and questions about whether AI-generated content deserves recognition in traditional art competitions. These incidents highlight ongoing tensions between technological innovation and traditional artistic practices in the Philippines.
