Trump announces destruction of Iran's tallest bridge
US President Donald Trump announced the destruction of Iran's tallest bridge, escalating tensions after his threats to bomb the country 'back to the Stone Ages.'
On April 2, 2026, US-Israeli airstrikes partially destroyed Iran's tallest bridge, the B1 bridge located 35 km southwest of Tehran in Alborz province. The attack resulted in 8 fatalities and 95 injuries according to Iranian Deputy Governor Ghodratollah Seif, who confirmed the casualties via state TV and Fars news agency. The B1 bridge, considered the tallest in the Middle East, suffered major structural collapse with videos showing sections tumbling down.
US President Donald Trump announced the destruction on social media, posting footage of the collapsing bridge with the message: "The biggest bridge in Iran comes tumbling down, never to be used again -- much more to follow! IT IS TIME FOR IRAN TO MAKE A DEAL BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE, AND THERE IS NOTHING LEFT OF WHAT STILL COULD BECOME A GREAT COUNTRY!" Trump followed this with additional threats stating: "Bridges next, then Electric Power Plants!" and warned that the U.S. military "hasn't even started destroying what's left in Iran."
The attack occurred during the fifth week of an ongoing US-Iran war, following Trump's prior warnings to bomb Iran "back to the Stone Age." Trump indicated that the United States would conduct strikes over the "next two to three weeks" while indirect talks between the two countries continue. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded on social media, calling the strike on civilian infrastructure a sign of enemy "defeat and moral collapse" and stating that "striking civilian structures, including unfinished bridges, will not compel Iranians to surrender," suggesting the destroyed bridge may have been under construction.
In retaliation, Iran released a hit-list of eight major bridges across four Gulf nations as potential targets. The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Iran allowed Philippine vessels passage through the Strait of Hormuz amid the escalating tensions. The bridge destruction represents a significant escalation in US-Israeli actions against Iran, with Trump promising further destruction unless negotiations begin, while Iran maintains its position of not surrendering to military pressure.
