A childcare center in Butterworth, Malaysia, has been temporarily closed pending investigation following the tragic death of a four-month-old baby under its care.

A 24-hour childcare centre within Seberang Jaya Hospital in Butterworth, Penang, Malaysia has been temporarily closed following the tragic death of four-month-old baby boy Hayl Haarith Mohd Syafaeez on March 9, 2026. The incident occurred at the hospital's childcare facility, which was established to serve hospital staff working night shifts. The baby was dropped off at the centre on the night of March 8 by his 30-year-old mother, who is a nurse working the night shift at the same hospital. Around 4am on March 9, the baby was found unresponsive and rushed to the hospital's emergency department where he received CPR for approximately an hour before being pronounced dead at 4:20am.

Two female employees in their 20s were arrested on March 9 and remanded for seven days on suspicion of murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. They appeared in court on March 10 for remand proceedings. Police chief Helmi Aris confirmed that investigators reviewed CCTV footage from the scene, which led to the arrests. The cause of death remains undetermined pending further investigation, with a post-mortem conducted but results inconclusive so far. Authorities have urged the public not to speculate while investigations continue.

The childcare centre has been shuttered under the Child Care Centre Act, with recommendations to revoke its registration. The state welfare department is monitoring the situation and providing psychological support to the grieving family. The baby's father, Mohd Syafaeez Mat Liki, a 35-year-old coconut milk trader, expressed devastation over the loss, noting that a video call with his son the night before was their last communication. The child was buried at Kelulut Muslim Cemetery in Terengganu on March 10.

As of March 11, 2026, investigations are ongoing without further updates on findings. The centre, which was equipped with CCTV and supervisors specifically for hospital staff, remains closed pending the outcome of the investigation. The case has drawn significant attention in Malaysia, highlighting concerns about childcare safety standards and oversight in institutional facilities.
