Civil society group drops 2nd impeach rap vs VP Sara Duterte
Tindig Pilipinas, a civil society group, withdrew its second impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, opting to fully support a third complaint that contains similar serious allegations to avoid procedural delays.
Tindig Pilipinas, a civil society group, announced on March 1, 2026, that it is withdrawing its second impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte. The group made this decision to consolidate support behind the third impeachment complaint filed by religious groups, priests, and lawyers. Both the second and third complaints contain identical grave allegations against Duterte, including betrayal of public trust, graft, corruption, plunder, and abuse of power related to the alleged misuse of at least P612 million in confidential funds.
The second impeachment complaint was originally filed on February 2, 2026, by Tindig Pilipinas co-convener Kiko Aquino Dee, with endorsements from Percival Cendaña and Mamamayang Liberal Rep. Leila de Lima. The third complaint was filed on February 9, 2026. Tindig Pilipinas emphasized that the consolidation was necessary to avoid procedural delays and speed up the impeachment process to reach the Senate impeachment court as quickly as possible.
In their official statement, Tindig Pilipinas declared that "VP Sara must be held accountable for plunder and abuse of power as soon as possible" and expressed concern about avoiding "procedural limbo and unnecessary legal delays." The group stated they would lend their full support to the third complaint, which contains the same substantial evidence and allegations as their withdrawn complaint.
The formal withdrawal was scheduled for March 2, 2026, coinciding with the House Committee on Justice's start of deliberations on the remaining verified impeachment complaints. This strategic move streamlines the impeachment process without benefiting Duterte, focusing efforts on a unified, stronger case. The development comes amid Duterte's recent announcement of a 2028 presidential run, which she claims has made her a target of politically motivated investigations.
