Israeli Envoy: Iran Responsible for Filipina Caregiver's Death in Israel; President Herzog Extends Personal Condolences
The Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines, Dana Kursh, has squarely blamed the Iranian regime for the death of Filipina caregiver Mary Ann de Vera in Israel amid the escalating Middle East conflict. Israeli President Isaac Herzog also personally met with de Vera's husband to express his profound condolences.
Mary Anne Velazquez de Vera, a 32-year-old Filipina caregiver from Basista, Pangasinan, was killed by shrapnel from an Iranian retaliatory airstrike in Israel on March 1, 2026. The incident occurred while she was helping her elderly ward reach a bomb shelter during the attack. Her husband, also an overseas Filipino worker in Israel, confirmed her identity. This marks the first Filipino casualty in the escalating Middle East conflict triggered by U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed the death in a video message, extending condolences and promising full government support including repatriation. He stated the situation of overseas Filipino workers is being closely monitored. Israeli officials, including Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oren Marmorstein, directly blamed Iran for the attack, stating that ballistic missiles from the Iranian regime killed the Philippine caregiver and that Iran was targeting civilians and civilian neighborhoods.
The Philippine government has activated response mechanisms through the Department of Migrant Workers and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, with emergency funds ready but no mandatory evacuation ordered yet. Approximately 31,000 Filipinos are in Israel and 800 in Iran. Airlines like Cebu Pacific have canceled flights and offered rebooking options due to the escalating conflict.
Filipino leaders including Vice President Sara Duterte and Senator Bong Go have issued advisories urging overseas Filipino workers to avoid conflict zones and crowds, and to adhere to embassy protocols. The incident has heightened concerns about Filipino workers' safety in the region as tensions continue to escalate between Israel and Iran.
