The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified security measures in Maguindanao del Sur following a deadly ambush on March 28, 2026, in Barangay Mother Poblacion, Shariff Aguak. The attack occurred around 9:00-9:10 p.m. when unidentified gunmen ambushed police officers from the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company as they were returning to Camp Datu Akilan (also called Camp Akilan) from patrol operations. The ambush resulted in five police officers killed and three others wounded, including a captain, senior master sergeant, and patrolman who are now receiving hospital treatment.
PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. condemned the attack as "senseless and cowardly" and ordered intensified hot pursuit operations in coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to identify and arrest the perpetrators. The Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PRO-BARMM) has deployed investigation teams and potential elite units to track down the assailants. This marks the third ambush near Camp Akilan since 2018, with previous incidents occurring on January 1, 2018, and June 15, 2023, making the area a known violence hotspot.
Authorities have launched a manhunt for the unidentified gunmen who fled the scene after the attack. PRO-BARMM Director Brig. Gen. Jaysen de Guzman stated that investigators are working to identify the assailants for full accountability. The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Interim Minister Abdulof Macua has committed to supporting the investigation and ensuring justice is served.
Security has been tightened throughout Maguindanao del Sur, with the PNP coordinating closely with military forces to prevent further attacks. The public has been urged to remain calm and cooperate with authorities. General Nartatez emphasized that "We will not waver. This attack will not go unanswered. Justice will be swift, certain, and uncompromising." The investigation continues with no suspects identified yet, and authorities are examining all possible motives and connections to previous incidents in the region.
