Rider killed by fallen acacia tree in Muntinlupa
A motorcycle rider tragically died in Muntinlupa City after an acacia tree unexpectedly fell on him.
A tragic accident occurred on March 11, 2026, around 9:30 PM along the National Road (Manila South Road) in Barangay Putatan, Muntinlupa City, when a large acacia tree suddenly collapsed and crushed a motorcycle rider. The victim was identified as Erwin Alfonso, a mall employee and resident of Las PiƱas City. According to police reports, the treeāestimated to be over 40 years old with internal rot despite appearing outwardly healthyāfell without any strong winds or adverse weather conditions, directly striking Alfonso who suffered severe chest and rib injuries. CCTV footage captured the incident showing the tree collapsing suddenly, hitting the motorcycle, a dump truck, and an SUV, while also striking electrical wires that caused sparks and prompting jeepney passengers to flee in panic.
Emergency responders from the Muntinlupa City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and police arrived at the scene, but Alfonso had no pulse upon their arrival. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The fallen tree completely blocked the road, requiring extensive clearing operations that lasted until around 2:00 AM on March 12. During cleanup, the road remained slippery from sawdust, with only two lanes made passable for traffic. Authorities also checked for damaged water lines that might affect local residents.
Local government officials described the incident as isolated, emphasizing that regular tree inspections and trimming are conducted in the area. No prior reports of strong winds or weather disturbances were noted at the time of the accident. The Muntinlupa police confirmed the details of the incident, noting that the tree fall killed the rider and affected other vehicles, though no other fatalities were reported. The accident caused significant traffic disruption along the major thoroughfare during the cleanup operations.
The incident highlights concerns about urban tree management and safety in Metro Manila. While the Muntinlupa local government unit has not issued an extensive official statement beyond confirming the basic facts, the tragedy has drawn attention to the need for regular assessment of aging trees in urban areas. The victim, Erwin Alfonso, was simply commuting home from work when the unexpected accident occurred, underscoring the random nature of such urban hazards. Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the tree's collapse, though initial assessments point to internal rot as the likely factor despite the tree's outwardly healthy appearance.
