WATCH: Batanes fishers fear sightings of foreign ships near Bashi Channel
Fishermen in the remote Batanes Islands are growing increasingly alarmed by frequent sightings of foreign vessels near the Bashi Channel. Amid escalating tensions between China and Taiwan, Batanes locals fear being caught in the potential crossfire, prompting calls for heightened vigilance.
Fishermen in the remote Batanes Islands, located just 150 kilometers south of Taiwan, are growing increasingly alarmed by frequent sightings of foreign vessels near the strategic Bashi Channel. The Bashi Channel separates Taiwan from Batanes and serves as a critical choke point for Chinese military operations in the region, as well as a location for U.S. and allied naval drills. Amid escalating tensions between China and Taiwan, Batanes locals fear being caught in potential crossfire, prompting calls for heightened vigilance from Philippine authorities.
Residents of Batanes have expressed concerns that a potential China-Taiwan conflict could spill over to affect their province due to its proximity to Taiwan, with the two separated by little more than 100 km. Unlike fishermen in disputed areas of the South China Sea where China claims territory, Batanes fishermen have maintained access to their traditional fishing grounds, but worry that rising regional tensions could disrupt their peaceful daily lives and fishing activities.
In February 2024, the Philippine, U.S., and Japanese militaries conducted joint exercises over the Bashi Channel, marking the first time such Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activities expanded beyond the South China Sea. Aircraft from the three nations patrolled over the Philippines' northernmost Batanes islands in drills aimed at showcasing their ability to operate together in strategic waterways. China's military responded angrily to these drills, with a PLA spokesperson stating that the Philippines had co-opted countries outside the region to organize joint patrols, disrupting peace and stability in the region.
The Bashi Channel itself is a crucial shipping chokepoint between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean, which explains why military and commercial vessel activity in the area is strategically significant and a source of concern for local residents. While specific reports from major Philippine news outlets about fishermen sightings were not found in the search results, the strategic importance of the area and ongoing military activities have heightened anxieties among Batanes residents about potential conflict spillover affecting their communities.
