Cops probe suspected hazing death in Cavite
A man died in General Trias City, Cavite, under suspicious circumstances, believed to be from injuries sustained during hazing rites. Police are now investigating the incident.
Police in General Trias City, Cavite are investigating the death of an unidentified man on March 2, 2025, which they suspect resulted from injuries sustained during hazing rites. The incident occurred when two unidentified individuals brought the unconscious victim to General Trias Medical Hospital in Barangay Manggahan around 2:00 p.m. in a Mitsubishi Mirage with license plate 948. The men claimed the victim was involved in a hit-and-run accident and sought help from hospital staff to remove him from the vehicle before fleeing with the driver shortly after.
Medical examination revealed the victim had numerous bruises, particularly on his thighs, consistent with hazing injuries. Despite revival efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m. The Police Regional Office 4A (PRO-4A) has classified the case as murder linked to hazing and is conducting follow-up operations to identify the victim and apprehend those responsible for bringing him to the hospital.
As of the latest reports, the victim remains unidentified, and no arrests have been made. Authorities are working to trace the vehicle and identify the individuals who fled the scene. The investigation is ongoing, with police focusing on determining the exact circumstances of the hazing incident and identifying the fraternity or organization involved.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about hazing practices in the Philippines despite the 1995 Anti-Hazing Law. The case follows other recent hazing-related deaths in Cavite province, including the high-profile case of John Matthew Salilig in 2023. Police records indicate this was at least the second reported hazing death in Cavite province that month, underscoring the persistent challenge of eliminating violent initiation practices in educational institutions and organizations.
