The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified monitoring of bus companies during the Holy Week exodus after eight bus firms were flagged for allegedly implementing illegal fare hikes. PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized that such actions would not be tolerated, aiming to protect the commuting public during this peak travel period. The crackdown comes amid the annual Holy Week exodus where millions of Filipinos travel to their home provinces, creating high demand for transportation services.
While President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had announced that ferry and bus operators committed not to increase fares during Holy Week, some companies reportedly implemented unauthorized fare hikes. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) have been actively monitoring the situation, with LTFRB issuing show-cause orders to violators. The PNP's involvement adds law enforcement muscle to these regulatory efforts.
According to reports, some bus terminals like the ParaƱaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) identified operators serving Bicol Region routes who implemented unauthorized fare increases. The fare hikes occurred despite President Marcos's directive against increases during Holy Week and amid rising fuel costs that have affected transportation operations nationwide.
The government has warned that overcharging passengers could lead to franchise suspension or revocation for violators. Passengers have been urged to report illegal fare hikes to authorities. The PNP's intensified monitoring represents a coordinated effort between law enforcement and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with fare regulations and protect travelers during this important religious holiday period.
