Abu Dhabi's Shah Oil Field Operations Suspended Following Drone Attack
Operations at the United Arab Emirates' Shah gas field have been suspended, and damage is being assessed, following a drone attack. This incident comes amidst heightened regional tensions due to the ongoing Iran war.
On March 16, 2026, a drone attack struck the Shah oil and gas field in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, causing a significant fire at one of the world's largest gas fields located approximately 180 kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi Media Office confirmed the incident, stating that emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the scene. No casualties or injuries were reported from the attack, and specialized firefighting teams successfully brought the blaze under control, though operations at the facility were temporarily suspended for damage assessment and safety checks.
The attack occurred amid heightened regional tensions stemming from the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, with the UAE facing repeated drone and missile attacks since late February 2026. According to UAE authorities, this was part of a broader pattern of Iranian-linked attacks that have resulted in seven deaths and 145 injuries across the country since the conflict began. The Shah field incident followed previous attacks on other UAE energy infrastructure, including a drone strike on March 10 at the Ruwais Industrial Complex near Shah.
UAE officials have described the attacks as 'blatant and treacherous' and reported that their air defense systems have been working around the clock to intercept incoming threats. Since the escalation began, UAE defenses have reportedly intercepted 304 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,627 drones targeting the country. The Shah field attack specifically targeted critical energy infrastructure, though the extent of damage to production facilities remains unclear.
The incident occurred within a broader regional context of attacks on energy infrastructure, with reports indicating simultaneous attacks on other facilities including the Majnoon oil field in southern Iraq. While Philippine news sources (GMA, ABS-CBN, Inquirer, Philstar) showed no coverage of this specific incident, international media reported the event as part of escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf region. The UAE government has advised the public to rely on official sources for information and avoid spreading rumors about the security situation.
